True Story
One day my father came home with a portable "Record Player" for the apartment. He placed it on top of our "Black and White" TV and started playing Frank Sinatra Albums.
Unlike today, if your parents put on music you listened to it, with out saying a word. If your lips started moving and they thought you were about to make a peep you were told to "Zip It" (motioned by zipping your lips from left to right).
So now there I was, Rock and Roll was playing on all the radio stations, the Brooklyn Fox had big venue shows with various artists, Alan Freed, Murry the K, Johnny Maestro was dating my cousin, Doo Wop was being heard on neighborhood corners and in subway stations.
My father played Sinatra, Sinatra, Sinatra all the time. However My mother made sure I had the latest 45's (which I still have) and went to the all the Rock and Roll shows at the Brooklyn Fox.And then it was Sinatra Weekends, played at a volume of 10. I would try not to listen and block it out. But, then my parents bought a stereo console that you could hear 10 blocks away there was no escape from the kid from Hoboken, "Bones"
Growing up I joined the choir and Glee Club (wouldn't mention the latter except that TV Show was a huge hit)
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, we moved to the Jersey Shore when I became a teenager. As a teen I was influenced by the British Invasion and Motown Soul Music. I formed a band, The Trieste and Trieste Soul Review. (after I left they changed their name back to Trieste and performed for many years)
The Trieste entered a Battle of The Bands at the Hulabaloo, in Middletown, NJ. We actually won over The Castilles an early Bruce Springsteen band (couldn't resist my 5 minute claim to fame) and tied for first place with The Ascots.
I then joined a rock band called The Last Chants (who changed their name to Odyssey) that played mostly "Hard Rock" throughtout New Jersey and the Jersey Shore (not to be confused with the reality show that is not a reality of the Jersey Shore Scene)
If you're bored. I'm getting to the point!!!!!
Finally, tired of blowing out my ear drums I joined The Ascots which played mostly at weddings and banquets.(OMG-I became The Wedding Singer)
My first year with the Ascots I really didn't do much vocals. Ole Blue Eyes came back and I learned a cut from the the album, "Let Me Try Again". I brought the arrangement to band practice and we added it to our set list. "Let Me Try Again" was my first entree to a Sinatra tune and our audience loved it. Everyone would say "You sound just like Frank Sinatra.
Wait, wait, wait, wait,wait.........(as in Joe Pesci) lets go back to Brooklyn for a minute.
Guess I owe most of it to my father. After listing to his Sinatra albums, a Brooklyn accent, and Sinatra phrasing and timing embedded in my brain, it just came natural. I never tried to sound like Frank at first, but I do, so I can. (Although I did meet him once, briefly, in an uptown NY City restaurant. I could swear people were telling him "Hey Frank you sound just like Vince", NOT:~)
On one occassion, with The Ascots, someone approached me and say "You, You, You you sound just like...... and before he could finish I said Frank Sinatra, right?.... He said NO........Paul Anka (true story)
